Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets
New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these medications should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
